WA: Police royal commission announced for WA

The WA government has announced a royal commission into alleged corruption into the
state's police service, beginning in February.

The announcement comes 18 months after the state's public sector watchdog body said
a significant number of detectives were engaged in criminal or corrupt conduct or tured
a blind eye to such activities.

WA Premier GEOFF GALLOP says the police royal commission will be headed by retired
WA Supreme Court judge GEOFFREY KENNEDY, who also chaired the royal commission into the
state government's dealings with big business -- known as WA Inc.

The police royal commission will examine -- among other things -- whether administrative
procedures need to be changed for the purpose of investigating corruption or criminal
conduct in the police service.
