Fed: Budget is designed to steady interest rates

The government says the May 9 budget is designed to steady interest rates.

Treasurer PETER COSTELLO says any looming threat of an interest rate rise .. is countered
by the government's family tax benefit.

He's refused to speculate on a possible rate rise .. but the Reserve Bank meets on
Tuesday to decide whether to raise rates.

The central bank has held rates at 5.5 per cent since March last year.
