Fed: Govt alienating women by refusing to exempt tampons Dems

CANBERRA, Feb 15 AAP - The government's refusal to exempt women's sanitary products
from the GST was being viewed by women as "discrimination," the Australian Democrats said
today.

The Democrats are expected to ask Treasurer Peter Costello today to exempt tampons from the GST.

They are also expected to write to Health Minister Dr Michael Wooldridge asking him
to exempt breast pumps for nursing mothers.

"I think the women of Australia now see this as an issue relating to discrimination,"

Democrats leader Senator Meg Lees told ABC radio.

"So, I say to the Prime Minister, if he wants the women of Australia back onside and
supportive of tax reform, he will deal with an issue that is now very much seen as one
of discrimination," she said.

Federal parliament resumes today for its first sitting for 2000.

FED: Howard says voters, not MPs, will decide republic

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says voters, not politicians, will decide whether Australia
becomes a republic in 2001.

The Prime Minister has refused to be drawn on the move by senior cabinet minister PETER
REITH to campaign against the proposal because he would prefer a republic with a president
elected by the people.

Australian Republican Movement chairman MALCOLM TURNBULL has criticised Mr REITH'S stand,
which he says is a ploy to try to block constitutional reform.

Mr HOWARD says Mr REITH is entitled to his views, along with other republicans in cabinet
including Treasurer PETER COSTELLO and government Senate Leader ROBERT HILL.

The Prime Minister says at the end of the day, the Australian people will decide it - not
him, not Mr REITH and not Mr TURNBULL.

SYDNEY, Feb 4 AAP - Almost 60,000 jobs would be lost nationally and millions of workers
worse off under the federal government's proposed GST, a public hearing heard today.

NSW: ACTU praises Woolies and urges others to follow suit

SYDNEY, Feb 27 AAP - The ACTU has lauded retail giant Woolworths for creating thousands
of new jobs, urging corporate leaders to follow its lead in the tough times ahead.

The retailer said on Friday it would create more than 7,000 jobs in the second half
of the 2008/09 financial year.

Woolworths CEO Michael Luscombe said the announcement followed the creation of 9,000
jobs in the first half of 2008/09.
